Boyd Notches Win at No. 1 Singles as Alabama A&M Women’s Tennis Drops 6-1 Decision at Troy

TROY, Ala. – Senior Jasmine Boyd (Marion, Ind.) delivered a win at No. 1 singles as Alabama A&M (0-4, 0-0 SWAC) fell 6-1 at Troy (3-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) in an NCAA Division I women's tennis match on Sunday, February 13.

Doubles play would see freshman Deja Brown (Spring Valley, Calif.) and senior India Woods (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) fall 6-0 at No. 3 to Kristina Kukaras and Michelle Ncube while juniors Camila Ruiz Diaz (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Ximena Duarte Ramirez (Asuncion, Paraguay) dropped a 6-2 decision to the Trojans' Franziska Ahrend and Chiara Desia Dbarno.

Boyd and junior Neha Ghare (Pune, India) then pushed Troy's top tandem of Anastasiia Khokhlova and Andrea Widing before falling just 6-4 to close out the doubles portion.

Up 1-0, the Trojans Olivia Elliott defeated Ramirez 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and Ahrend followed with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the six spot to make it 3-0. Ghare would drop a 6-0, 6-2 match at No. 4 to seal the final result but the Bulldogs were not done securing what that margin would be.

Brown fell 6-1 in the first set to Kukaras at No. 2 and nearly forced a third set before falling 7-5. Ruiz Diaz battled against Ncube at the three spot but dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision, setting up A&M's best match of the day.

That would come at the No. 1 position as Boyd rebounded from an opening 6-2 loss to Khokhlova to notch a commanding 6-1 second set victory and clinch the frame with a thrilling 10-8 tiebreaker to reach the final margin of 6-1.

The Bulldogs return to action next weekend as they face Southern, Grambling and Bethune-Cookman from February 18-20. Part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Roundup, those matches will be played in Jackson, Mississippi.
