HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M (11-17, 10-8 SWAC) dropped a 50-49 decision against Southern (17-13, 12-6 SWAC) in the final five seconds of an NCAA Division I men's basketball game on Saturday, March 5.
Junior forward
Jalen Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) led the Bulldogs with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds while junior guard
Garrett Hicks (Madison, Ala.) added 12 points, eight boards and four steals. Sophomore guard
Dailin Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) had eight points and six rebounds while junior center
EJ Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in with six points and two boards.
Over the first 15 minutes the Bulldogs built a 22-17 lead that included 10 points from Hicks and six from Johnson. The Jaguars would then flip the switch and unleash a 9-2 run to head into the break leading 26-24.
SU would start the second half by scoring nine of 14 points to extend their score to 35-29 with 15:58 remaining on the clock. The Bulldogs would then respond with a 13-7 run that included six points from Johnson and four from Williams to even the score 42-42 at 5:22.
The Jaguars would then answer with a mini 4-0 run to take the advantage 46-42 before the Bulldogs had a 5-1 burst to once again tie the score, 47-47.
With 17 seconds left on the clock AAMU would respond with two points from junior guard
Cameron Tucker (Birmingham, Ala.) securing both his free throws to take the lead, 49-47 before SU responded with a layup from Jayden Saddler to even the score 49-49. He would then secure his free throw to close out the narrow 50-49 victory.
Saddler would lead SU with 13 points and a pair of steals with Tyrone Lyons following with 12 points, six boards and three steals. Terrell Williams Jr. added six points and eight rebounds while Brion Whitley finished with five points and three boards to round out the top performers.
Alabama A&M will now head to the 2022 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament scheduled for March 9-12 at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.
