Alabama A&M Baseball Delivers 9-7 Victory Over Jackson State On Final Day

JACKSON, Miss. – Alabama A&M (8-30, 5-17 SWAC) delivered a barrage of runs in the last two innings to secure a 9-7 decision at Jackson State (21-22, 9-12 SWAC), on Sunday, May 1 in an NCAA Division I baseball game.

The Tigers would waste no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with Jaelen Williams reaching on a fielder's choice and allowed Devontae Rhodes to score for a 1-0 advantage. They would then capitalize in the bottom of second inning with Jefrey Rodriguez grounding out at second base and allowed Chevalier Dorris Jr. to score and lead by two.
 
No team would affect the score until the Bulldogs responded in the top of the fifth inning as graduate center fielder Damani Thomas (Zellwood, Florida) singled to right center and brought home third baseman junior Jared Tribett (Lumberton, Miss.) to score before graduate left fielder Nemo Wright (PG County, Md.) singled up the middle and allowed both Thomas and sophomore catcher Dillon Roop (New Market, Ala.) to score and take the lead, 3-2.
 
The Bulldogs would stretch their advantage in the top of the sixth inning as junior third baseman Tommy Easley (Acworth, Ga.) flied out to left field and sophomore short stop Chandler Stocking scored to increase the lead by two.
 
JSU would answer in the bottom of the seventh inning with Jatavis Melton signaling through the left side for a two RBI that brought home Dorris Jr. and Marcus Atterberry before Rhodes singled to left center and allowed Rodriguez to add the final run of the evening and take the advantage, 5-4.
 
AAMU would then respond in the top of the eighth inning with a barrage of three runs as freshman second baseman Jalen Ford (Birmingham, Ala.) walked and allowed graduate right fielder Tim Dixon (Debary, Fla.) to score and even the game 5-5. The Bulldogs would then flip the switch as Roop singled through the left side for a two RBI and both freshman pinch hitter Devin Tonkins (Greensboro, N.C.) and Dixon score to take the lead 7-5.
 
The Bulldogs would continue their offensive barrage in the top of the ninth inning with Ford hitting a two RBI that signaled up the middle and allowed junior second baseman C.J. Mervilus (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Dixon to score to increase the advantage to 9-5.
 
The Tigers would respond in the bottom of the final inning with Ty Hill doubling to left field and Rhodes scored before  Caleb Evans singled to left field and Hill scored the final run of the game but it would not be enough as the Bulldogs closed out the 9-7 victory.
 
Melton led Jackson State with a 2-for-5 day with two RBIs while Rhodes was 2-of-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored. Chris Sosa threw 0.1 innings allowing two earned runs while striking out one to fall to 0-1.

Ford led the Bulldogs with a 1-for-4 day and three RBIs while Roop was 1-of-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Thomas had a 1-for-3 day with an RBI and a run scored and Stocking was 1-of-3 while adding three scored runs. Sophomore pitcher Evan Crenshaw (Memphis, Tenn.) threw three innings allowing five earned runs while striking out one to move to 3-0.
 
AAMU will return to the field on Tuesday, May 3 as they face off against No. 1 Tennessee in Knoxville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST at Lidsey Nelson Stadium.
