Late Goal Drops Alabama A&M Women’s Soccer By Narrow 1-0 Decision at Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – As they have all year, Alabama A&M (2-4-0, 0-0-0 SWAC) delivered another impressive defensive performance but could not scratch the scoreboard as they fell by a narrow 1-0 margin at Austin Peay (2-3-3, 0-0-0 ASUN) in an NCAA Division I women's soccer game on Sunday, September 11.

The Bulldogs turned away seven shots in the first half but they weren't the only ones to deliver an impressive defensive outing as they were held without a shot in the opening frame. Coming out of that halftime deadlock, both teams were offensive minded as they traded shots in the 58th and 60th minutes, to no avail.

Freshman forward Taylor McNeal (Kennesaw, Ga.) fired one off at 69:57 but when APSU answered it would be with a ball that would find the back of the net. With 74:45 gone by, Marli Niederhauser found Olivia Prock in front of the net and she buried it for a 1-0 advantage.

The clubs would then combine for five shots the rest of the way, three for A&M and a pair by senior forward Makayla Rushing (Red Oak, Texas). None would find their way home and the Governors would escape with the slim 1-0 victory.

Rushing and senior forward Jameela Barrett (London, England) would each notch a pair of shots with one on frame to lead Alabama A&M offensively. Senior goalkeeper Laura Jansa (Barcelona, Spain) played all 90 minutes, making five saves and surrendering just the one score to suffer the loss and drop to 2-4 on the year.

Prock would deliver her goal off the bench, putting both shots on frame, for Austin Peay while Niederhauser had the assist. Lindsey McMahon also fired off a pair of shots with both on goal and Chole Dion made a pair of saves in notching the shutout victory to move to 2-3-3.

The Bulldogs return home when they host Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday, September 14. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Bulldog Field.
