Women’s Basketball Ends Road Trip with Loss to Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. – In their final game of the opening Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) road trip, Alabama A&M women's basketball struggled offensively in their matchup against Jackson State, falling 63-35 on Monday evening in the Williams Athletics & Assembly Center.

Neither team would have to wait long to put points on the board, as Jackson State hit a three on the opening possession, followed by a long ball from Amani Free (Clay, N.Y.) for the Bulldogs (5-9, 2-1 SWAC) on the next trip down.

At the 7:24 mark, the Tigers scored inside to start a 10-2 run over the next few minutes, leading 13-5 until a response from Chynell Mitchell (Austin, Texas) to pull end the scoring drought, helping Alabama A&M cut the lead to 14-9 at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter proved to be the crucial run of the game, as A&M again struggled to score, failing to make a field goal in the period. Jackson State went on a 20-2 run during the period, forcing nine Bulldog turnovers and led 34-11 at the half.

After five points from the Tigers to open the third, Taylor Smith (Fosters, Ala.) ended the scoreless span with a three pointer, making the score 39-14, as they continued to fight heading into the fourth down 51-25 on a last possession score from Toni Grace (Fishers, Ind.). Jackson State remained in control in the final quarter, as the teams traded scores, giving Alabama A&M their first SWAC loss of the season.

The Bulldogs were led by Free with eight points, as they shot just 19 (12-for-63) percent from the field and 18.5 (5-for-27) from the three-point line.
