Amiah Simmons and
Amani Free combined for 46 points to lead Alabama A&M to a 67-50 victory over Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
A&M's dynamic duo scored 18 points apiece in the first half to stake the Bulldogs to a 46-27 lead at halftime and the outcome was never in doubt.
The Bulldogs, who ran their winning streak to three straight games, improved to 11-11 overall and 9-3 in league play. MVSU fell to 2-21 and 0-12 in league play with its 15
th straight loss.
Simmons (Osawatomie, KS) led the way with 25 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds. The 5-foot-9 sophomore guard was 9-of-17 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and 6-of-9 from the free throw line.
Free (Clay, N.Y.) finished with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting. The 6-0 graduate transfer forward was 6-of-8 from deep. Free's three-point play with 2:12 left gave A&M's its largest lead of the game at 61-32.
A&M shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the field, including 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from three-point range, and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the free throw line.
Kerrigan Johnson and Elisa Saffold led MVSU with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
MVSU shot 31.1 percent (19-of-61) from the field, including 25 percent (4-of-16) from three-point range, and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the charity stripe.
A&M will try to run its winning streak to four straight games when it visits Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night.
The Bulldogs host Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 18 and Florida A&M on Feb. 20 in their final homestand of the season.
