HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Bulldogs men's basketball program will look to extend their win streak at home with a pair of SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) games over the next few days at the Event Center. The first will be against Southern on Saturday, and the second will be against Grambling State on Monday night.
Alabama A&M (8-14, 4-5 SWAC) enters weekend play tied with three other teams with a 4-5 conference record, after splitting the Florida trip with a win against Florida A&M on January 28 before dropping their last meeting against Bethune-Cookman on January 30.
Guard play continues to be crucial for the Bulldogs this season, as
Garrett Hicks (Madison, Ala.) leads the team and sits third in the SWAC at 14.7 points per game, followed by
Dailin Smith (Colorado Springs, Co.) and
Messiah Thompson (Atlanta, Ga.) at 10.0 and 9.9 points per contest.
Southern (12-10, 8-1) currently stands alone atop the SWAC standings and have won three straight dating back to a win at Mississippi Valley State on January 23. Three Jaguars average double figures on the year, led by Brion Whitley at 12.5 points, followed by Bryson Etienne at 11.1 and Tyrone Lyons at 10.0 points per game.
Meanwhile, Grambling State (13-8, 6-3 SWAC) comes in tied for third with Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 6-3 in conference play. When last seen, the Tigers fell at home to Alcorn State, 63-60, on January 30 and hold a 5-6 record away from home. Cameron Christon leads the way offensively at 14.3 points per contest, followed by Carte'are Gordon and Shawndarius Cowart at 11.7 and 11.0 points respectively.
