HUNTSVILLE, Ala. __ The Bulldogs bats came to play on a cloudy Wednesday for the home opener at Bulldog Softball Field as Alabama A&M (6-6) swept a midweek doubleheader against Oakwood.
Alabama A&M 7, Oakwood 1
Oakwood opened the game with a deep shot to center, resulting in a leadoff double, and later scored to go up 1-0 early in the contest.
The Bulldogs responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning, as
Venice Sanders (Birmingham, Ala.) brought home
Zahria Jones (Huntsville, Ala.) on a triple to left.
A&M took control in the second, plating four runs in the frame. After an RBI single from
Taylor Woods (Decatur, Ga.), both
Allyson Riches (Sacramento, Calif.) and
Brooklyn Wallace (Hartselle, Ala.) drove in runs on triples to put Bulldogs up 4-1. Jones drove home the final run of the inning on a single to bring home Wallace to take a 5-1 lead.
The Bulldogs added their final runs in the third and fourth innings to take the 7-1 lead in the first game of the doubleheader.
Paige Scott (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada) picked up the win in the circle for her fourth win on the year. The right-hander pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on two hits and struck out a career-high 15 batters.
Alabama A&M 16, Oakwood 1
Plating 14 runs including three homers in the bottom half of the first inning, Alabama A&M routed Oakwood by a 16-1 final in the final leg of the home doubleheader.
Junior
Krista Sikes (Russellville, Ala.) led the way in the circle against the Ambassadors to pick up her first win of the season, allowing just one run and one hit with eight strikeouts, while
Sydney Hall (Ardmore, Ala.) pitched in the final inning after coming out of the bullpen.
Senior
Allyson Riches (Sacramento, Calif.) came up with the walk-off double to drive home
Imani Mathis (Elk Grove, Calif.) for the final score as Alabama A&M ended the contest in five innings.
At the plate, Jones and
Serena Herbranson (Hermit, Calif.) both earned multiple hits and drove in four and three runs respectively, while Jones, Woods, and
Faith Cross (Pulaski, Tenn.) all homered in the first.
Meanwhile, Sanders finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs in contest that saw eight different batters to earn a hit and nine different Bulldogs cross the plate.
