Bulldogs Complete Sweep of Mississippi Valley State on Sunday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – After weather pushed the final two games of the weekend series to Sunday, Alabama A&M earned a pair of wins to close the series, defeating the Delta Devilettes 6-2 and 4-3 at the Bulldog Softball Field.

Alabama A&M 6, Mississippi Valley State 2
Alabama A&M (14-11, 5-4 SWAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Allyson Riches scored the first run after Zahria Jones drew a walk with the bases loaded. Two batters later, Serena Herbranson got on base off an error, driving home Brooklyn Wallace.

The Bulldogs extended their lead in the third with another two runs off two hits in the frame. Wallace started off the innings with a single to right field, and scored on the next at-bat on a double from Venice Sanders. Sanders later scored on a sacrifice fly to right field from Jones to take a 4-0 lead. A&M scored their final two runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Wallace who drove home Riches and Callia Rooks.

Mississippi Valley State found their offense in the sixth with a pair of runs, however the Bulldogs controlled the final frame to close out the 6-2 game.

Alabama A&M 4, Mississippi Valley State 3
The third game of the series was a pitching duel to start, as Mississippi Valley earned the first hit of the contest from either side in the top of the third inning.

Natalie Picado singled to left field in the bottom half of the frame for the first hit for the Bulldogs, but was left on base after a groundout and fly ball to end the inning.

The Delta Devilettes got on the board in the fourth, opening the inning with a triple to left center. They scored on the next at-bat on a groundout. MVSU scored again in the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 3-0 lead, the same margin held heading into the final inning.

The Bulldogs started their comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a double from Faith Cross to open the inning, followed by an RBI single from Herbranson to get the first run of the game.

Rooks got on with a bunt single on the next at-bat and stole second to get in scoring position before Taylor Woods drove in two runs to tie the game after an error by the Delta Devilettes outfield. After Woods advanced to third on a groundout from Jalia Calloway, Riches drove in the winning run with a walk-off single for the 4-3 win.

Paige Scott (5-3) and Krista Sikes (4-1) both pitched complete games in the wins, as Scott allowed just two runs and three hits, while striking out eight batters. Meanwhile, Sikes allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four in her appearance in the final game.
