Bulldogs Secure Sweep Over Mississippi Valley State with 14-8 Win on Sunday

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. __ Senior Taylor Woods wasted no opportunities at the plate on Sunday in the weekend finale against Mississippi Valley State, driving in four runs on two hits to lead Alabama A&M past the Delta Devilettes by a score of 14-8 to secure the series sweep.

Both pitching staffs had their hands full in the contest, frequently dealing with runners on base. Alabama A&M collected 15 hits, while Mississippi Valley State had ten on the day.

The Bulldogs (18-14, 9-6 SWAC) got on the board in the second inning when Woods got on after an error from the right fielder, later allowing her to score for an inside-the-park homer, scoring three runs as Faith Cross and Brooklyn Wallace also crossed the plate.

After a response from the Delta Devilettes with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, A&M added runs in the next three innings, with two in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to gain a 7-2 lead.

Alabama A&M tallied six runs in the seventh inning. The offense in the inning was led by Cross, Wallace, Allyson Riches, and Serena Herbranson, who all drove runners across the plate with the inning.

Mississippi Valley attempted a comeback in the final inning, scoring four runs in the seventh, however came up short in the bid as the Bulldogs took the 14-8 win.

Paige Scott (6-3) got the win for Alabama A&M, going five and two-thirds innings and allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out three. Krista Sikes started the game for A&M, surrendering two hits and one run over the first one and one-third innings.

Jones led the Bulldogs from the plate on the day with three hits, followed by four other hitters to claim at least two in the contest. Woods earned four RBI in her strong performance, while Riches drove in three runs to help secure the sweep.

A&M will battle rival Alabama State next weekend in Montgomery, after splitting the series in Huntsville. The series opener on Friday is set for a 5 p.m. start at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
