Baseball Drops Sunday Matchup against Jackson State

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Jackson State scored five combined runs in the first two innings of the series finale to gain control of the contest and defeat Alabama A&M 14-5 at the Bulldog Baseball Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers saw the ball well early, recording a double, RBI triple and homer run to left field on just four pitches in the first.

After getting out of the top half of the frame, Myles Jackson hit a double to left to lead off the Bulldogs, followed by a walk from Mekhi Lloyd to get two runners on. Blake Martin drove home Jackson for the first run for A&M on a single to left field to make the score 3-1.

Jackson State hit another two-run bomb in the third and later added to their lead again in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs off three hits to take a 7-1 lead after four.

Finding themselves down 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs plated three runs, starting with a two-out triple from Chandler Stocking to score Jalen Parker and Blake Martin. CJ Mervilus drove Stocking home on the next at-bat on a single to center field to trim the deficit to 9-4.

A five-run seventh inning from the Tigers put the game out of reach, as three out of the first four batters earning hits, including a double and triple to drive in runs. Jackson State later added their next run on a sacrifice fly before the final two score of the frame on a balk and walk respectively to go up 14-4.

The Bulldogs added three more scores in the contest, as Brycen Hammonds subbed in a hit a solo homer to left in the seventh, followed by an RBI single from Jackson in the eighth and RBI double from Martin in the final inning.

Martin went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate on the day, along with a pair of RBI, a walk, and scoring a run. Jackson, Mervilus, and Stocking all earned a pair of hits, as the team combined for 12 total in the loss.

Noah Whitted (2-4) suffered the loss on the mound, pitching against the first 10 batters and allowing five runs on five hits, followed by Jason Marono who worked for five innings in relief. Dimitri Stamataplous and Josue Espaillat both appeared in the seventh, while Terence Sales closed out the final two innings, striking out three.

A&M will resume the back half of conference plate next weekend, as they travel for a road series against Mississippi Valley State. First pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m. at Magnolia Field.
