MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama A&M (21-16, 12-8 SWAC) fell behind early and could not complete the comeback in a 6-3 loss to Alabama State on Sunday to close out the three-game series.
Alabama State jumped on the board first, scoring on an RBI single after the Bulldogs left three runners on base in the top of the inning with a pair of walks and one to reach on a passed ball.
The Hornets followed with three runs in the second inning, recording a pair of two-out singles to drive in the first two scores, followed by the final crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
Alabama A&M gave up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to trail 6-0 before finally finding their offense in the sixth. After
Serena Herbranson singled up to lead off the inning,
Venice Sanders drove her home with a triple down the right field line. Sanders scored on the next at-bat on a groundout from
Zahria Jones.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs reeled off three straight singles from
Dakota Daniels, Herbranson, and Sanders to add another run, however the game ended on a line drive to center for the third out.
The Bulldogs totaled five hits in the game, led by two each from Sanders and Herbranson.
Meanwhile,
Paige Scott (8-4) took the loss for Alabama A&M, working four innings and allowing seven hits and six runs while striking out two. Bailey Greenlee earned the win for the Hornets.
