Bulldogs Fall in Final Midweek Contest at UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. __ In the final midweek matchup of the season for Alabama A&M, UT Martin scored seven runs in two different innings on Tuesday afternoon on the way to winning the rematch between the two programs by a score of 17-7 in seven innings at Skyhawk Field.

The Skyhawks (18-31) captured the split of the season series after the run-rule effort, piling up 14 hits in the win. The Bulldogs (12-30) racked up 11 hits in the seven-inning affair yet fell behind big in the second and could not recover, despite scoring multiple runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth.

UT Martin broke the game open with a seven-run explosion in the bottom of the second, pounding out five hits along with an error from A&M for the only lead change of the game.

The Bulldogs responded in the fourth, starting with singles from Tommy Easley, Blake Martin, and Brycen Hammonds to start the frame, with the Easley scoring on the single to right from Hammonds. Later in the inning, Jared Tribbet hit an RBI single to center field to bring home Martin, while Chevalier Dorris brought home Hammonds to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Following a trio of runs from the Skyhawks, A&M found their offense again in the fifth with a pair of runs, again with three straight hits to start the inning. After singles from Jalen Ford and Easley, Martin drove home the next run on a double to left, followed by a sacrifice fly from Hammonds to make the score 10-5, however UT Martin stretched the lead again in the bottom half of the fifth, adding seven runs yet again to go up 17-5. The Bulldogs scored two final runs in the top of the sixth, however could not continue to rally in the loss.

Easley and Martin led A&M at the plate, going 3-for-3 and 2-for-4 respectively, while Easley scored twice and drove a pair of runs in. Six other batters earned a hit on the day, totaling 11 for the game on 31 at bats.

Five pitchers took the mound in the contest for the Bulldogs, as Dustin Hernandez (0-1) picked up the loss on the mound, while Terence Sales, Roman Sorrell, Jackson Hall, and Brett Parker all worked out of the bullpen.

A&M will return to action on Friday, as they head back on the road to face rival Alabama State starting Friday at 6 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
