HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alisha Wilson finished with a double-double of 18 rebounds and 13 points as the Alabama A&M University women's basketball team got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 64-51 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Mississippi Valley State at the AAMU Event Center.
Alabama A&M (11-13 overall, 6-6 SWAC) trailed early in the second quarter before pulling away in the fourth to complete the season sweep of Mississippi Valley State.
Wilson led the way for the Bulldogs, with 18 points and 13 points, along with two assists and one block.
Darian Burgin poured in 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Amiah Simmons chipped in 12 points and five boards.
Jaylia Reed led MVSU (2-23, 1-11) with 15 points, six boards, three assists and two steals. Sh'Diamond McKnight added 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alabama A&M took a 15-13 advantage into the second period after a triple by Darian Burgin
- MVSU scored the next points, capped by a Sadie Williams jumper, as the Devilettes took a 19-15 lead with 8:48 remaining
- Alabama A&M responded with a 7-0 run, capped by free throws by Wilson as the Bulldogs grabbed a 22-19 advantage with 5:22 left
- AAMU stretch the lead to 31-24 right before the break after four straight free throws by Wilson
- The Devilettes trimmed the margin to 33-32 after two free throws by S'Diamond McKnight with just under seven minutes to play in the third
- The Bulldogs answered with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes, capped by a Simmons pull-up jumper as Alabama A&M extended the margin to 45-32 with 3:24 left
- Mississippi Valley State closed the period strong, using an 11-3 run, cutting the deficit to 48-43
- AAMU stretched the advantage to 55-43 after a Burgin trey with 6:43 remaining
- The Devilettes could not recover as AAMU completed the season sweep
