AAMU Seeks Best Start Since 2021-22 Season

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team seeks its best start since the 2021-22 season as the Bulldogs take to the road for a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) games, starting on Saturday at Alcorn State. Tip-off against the Braves is scheduled for 3 p.m. from the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Miss.
 
Alabama A&M (6-9 overall, 2-0 SWAC) has started the conference season 3-1 three times (2021-22, 2013-14, 2005-06) since joining NCAA Division I.
 
AAMU is 20-21 against Alcorn State since 2004 and ended a five-game losing streak to the Braves in the SWAC Men's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals with a 75-63 victory. The last time the Bulldogs won in Lorman, Miss. was during the 2015 season, a 73-69 victory. 
 
The Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing streak last week and opened conference play with back-to-back home victories over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State. 
 
Lorenzo Downey averaged 15.0 points and 8.0 rebounds, while also shooting 50.0 percent from the floor, while Chad Moodie averaged 14.0 points and 6.0 boards. Both AC Bryant and Bilal Abdur-Rahman posted 12.5 points over those two victories.
 
Alabama A&M averaging 76.9 points per game and shooting 41.5 percent from the field. 
 
The Bulldogs rank fourth nationally in offensive rebounds per game and eighth in turnovers forced per game.
 
AC Bryant leads two Bulldog players in double figures, averaging 12.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game, while Chad Moodie is posting 12.0 points, 4.8 boards, 1.1 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.3 blocks. 
 
Alcorn State (0-13, 0-1) opened conference play last weekend with a 72-69 home loss to rival Jackson State.
 
The Braves shot 50.0 percent (26-of-52) from the floor and got 34 points in the paint in the loss to JSU.
 
Keionte Cornelius is the lone ASU player averaging double figures at 10.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
 
Alcorn State is shooting 37.1 percent from the floor and averaging 60.7 points per game.
 
After Saturday's game, Alabama A&M continues its Mississippi road swing as the Bulldogs visit Jackson State on Monday. Tip-off against the Tigers is scheduled for 7 p.m. and streamed on the JSU Sports Network.
 
Jackson State meets Alabama State on Saturday before playing host to Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs are 13-26 against the Tigers since 2004 and enter on a two-game losing streak to JSU. The last road win for AAMU came during the 2020 season, a 66-57 victory.
