AAMU Snaps Losing Streak, Rolls Past PVAMU

THE HILL | AC Bryant and Chad Moodie combined for 43points as the Alabama A&M University men's basketball team ended a four-game losing streak on Monday night with a 98-80 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Prairie View A&M at the AAMU Event Center.
 
Alabama A&M (7-13 overall, 3-4 SWAC) led by 10 at the break and exploded in the second half with 58 points as the Bulldogs picked up their first win since Jan. 6 against Mississippi Valley State. Prairie View A&M (4-17, 3-5) opened the night with nine players, but Elijah Terry was ejected with a flagrant foul just 1:52 seconds into the game and could not recover from a big second-half deficit.
 
Bryant paced Alabama A&M with 27 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, along with six rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block. Moodie recorded a double-double of 16 points and 10 boards. Darius Ford added nine points, two assists and two steals.
 
Braelon Bush scored 17 of his game-high 28 points in the second half. He went 10-of-15 from the field, and added two steals, two assists and one rebound. Tanahj Pettway registered 22 points, seven boards, five assists and two steals, while Zaakir Sawyer tailed 12 points, three assists, two steals and one board.


 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M opened the game on a 11-3 run, capped by a Moodie dunk, with 15:43 remaining and stretched the advantage to 18-9 after free throws by Clance Crosby with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half.
 
A Bush 3-pointer closed the gap to 18-14 with 11:01 left, but London Riley's triple, free throws by Lorenzo Downey and a dunk by Moodie extended the lead to 25-14 with just under 10 minutes remaining. 
 
Prairie View A&M continued to stay within reach as Pettway scored on a layup, cutting the deficit to 33-26 with 4:30 left.
 
A layup, followed by two free throws by Darius Ford sent the Bulldogs into the break with a 40-30 lead.
 
Alabama A&M stretched its lead to 52-38 after a trey by Bryant with just under 16 minutes to play, but Prairie View A&M answered and cut the deficit in half, 52-45, after free throws by Marcel Bryant with 14:18 left.
 
However, a dunk by Angok Anyang and a triple by Bryant got the Bulldogs lead back to double digits, 57-47, with 13:05 remaining.
 
The Panthers trimmed the margin to 59-53, but the Bulldogs responded with a 9-0 run, capped by Quincy McGriff free throws as AAMU extended the lead to 68-53 with 10:25 left.
 
Alabama A&M continued to stretch its lead, pushing the advantage to 82-63 after a Bryant triple with 6:44 left.
 
Prairie View A&M could not recover from the huge deficit as Alabama A&M snapped a four-game losing streak.

  • Alabama A&M shot 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the floor and 84.4 percent (27-of-32) from the free-throw line
  • The Bulldogs grabbed 41 rebounds, with 16 coming off the offensive glass
