Griffin Paces Bulldogs in Mayor’s Cup defeat to UAH

THE HILL | Kamiyha Griffin finished with 14 points, but it wasn't enough as the Alabama A&M University women's basketball dropped a 74-63 decision in the Mayor's Cup to UAH on Monday night at the AAMU Event Center.
 
Griffin was 6-of-6 from the floor to finish with 14 points and two assists. Sumayah McIntosh added 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Jaida Belton posted a double-double of 13 rebounds and 11 points. Moses Davenport poured in 11 points and five boards.
 
Lili Wilken scored 14 of her game-high 25 points in the second half, along with nine boards and two assists. Millie Brown added 20 points, three assists, two steals and two boards.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M jumped out to a 10-6 advantage after a free throw by Kalia Walker with 4:43 remaining in the opening quarter but UAH used an 8-0 run, capped by a triple by Millie Brown to grab a 14-10 advantage with 2:46 left.
 
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 19-18 after a fastbreak layup by Aniya Palmer with 40 seconds left, but a 3-pointer by Chloe Siegel gave UAH the 22-18 advantage after one period.
 
The Chargers pushed the advantage to 29-24 after a layup by Lili Wilken with 7:20 remaining in the first half.
 
UAH stretched the lead to 32-24 as Wilken drained a triple from the corner with just over five minutes to play. 
 
Alabama A&M closed the gap to 32-29 after a free throw by Moses Davenport, but free throws by Wilken sent UAH into the break with a 36-31 lead.
 
The Bulldogs opened the second half strong and used an 11-3 run to grab a 42-39 advantage after a Kamiyha Griffin bucket with just under five minutes to play in the third.
 
Back came the Chargers as Wilken's layup gave UAH the 48-46 lead with 1:33 remaining, but a triple by Zaria Glover put the Bulldogs back on top, 49-48, with 1:19 left in the quarter.
 
The Chargers began the final period on an 11-2 run, holding the Bulldogs without a field goal for more than four minutes, as UAH pushed the lead to 62-53 with 5:35 remaining. 
 
UAH extended the lead to 69-57 with after a bucket by Wilken with 3:15 left, but AAMU refused to go away quietly as the Bulldogs closed the gap to 69-64 with just over one minute to play after free throws by Sumayah McIntosh.
 
However, the Bulldogs could not get any closer during the final 30 seconds as UAH won the 2025 Mayor's Cup.

  • Alabama A&M shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field and 58.1 percent (18-of-31) from the free-throw line
