Big First Quarter Carries Bulldogs to Record Victory

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team made a huge statement on Wednesday night, opening the season with a 103-32 rout of Talladega College at the AAMU Event Center.

The 103 points matched the most scored in the NCAA Division I era for the Bulldogs, tying the previous mark of 103 set in 2002 versus Savannah State.

Alabama A&M's defense smothered Talladega from the start as the Bulldogs held the Tornadoes without a field goal in the opening quarter in jumping out to a 31-4 advantage. Talladega, which shot 7.4 percent in the first half, got its first bucket from the floor with 4:33 remaining in the first half as AAMU had built a commanding 43-10 lead.

Kayln Ervin led four AAMU players in double figures with 14 points, on 4-of-7 shooting, along with six rebounds, five steals and two assists. Moses Davenport recorded 12 points and five boards. Coriah Beck posted 10 points, eight boards and a pair of assists, while Aniya Palmer tallied 10 points, four boards, two assists, one steal and one block.

Ceara Myers led Talladega with nine points and four boards.

Alabama A&M (1-0) jumped out to a 25-1 lead after an Ervin triple with 2:24 remaining as the Bulldogs and the Maroon & White continued to stretch the margin, pushing the advantage to 31-4 after one quarter.

The Bulldogs extended the lead to 43-7 after a Beck jumper with 6:33 left in the second period and the Tornadoes got their first field goal with a 3-pointer off the glass from Courtney Lowe with 4:33 remaining in the half.

Alabama A&M, which shot 51.4 percent in the first half was in cruise control, taking a 54-15 lead into the break.

It was much of the same in the third period as Alabama A&M stretched the advantage to 63-18 after a Shelomi Sanders free throw with 5:33 left.

The Bulldogs continued to extend the margin, pushing the lead to 78-24 after three quarters and cruised in the final period to open the season with a big victory.
