Bryant Tabs Williams as Assistant AD for Sports Performance

THE HILL | Alabama A&M University Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant announced on Wednesday the addition of John Williams as Assistant AD for Sports Performance.

Williams has extensive experience at various levels of athletics. He's worked with numerous teams, including those at the collegiate and professional levels, and is recognized for his expertise in speed, agility, power, and strength training.

"Hiring a Strength and Conditioning Coach is one of the most critical decisions we make for the long-term success of our program," Bryant said. "John Williams goes beyond physical training — he is about building a culture of discipline, resilience, and peak performance. He will inspire our athletes to push their limits, stay accountable, and grow as individuals both on and off the field."

Before coming to The Hill, Williams served as the Director of Strength & Conditioning at James Madison University since 2016.

Before his time in Harrisonburg, Va., Williams served as a football strength & conditioning coach at South Carolina State, Kansas, Baylor and North Carolina.

Known as "Big John," he spent three-and-a-half years at South Carolina State, where he was Director of Strength & Conditioning. He oversaw the overall strength & conditioning programming for all SCSU student-athletes, while providing day-to-day leadership in the football team's strength and conditioning plans. He was also head strength coach at SCSU for two seasons (2008-09) and was considered an integral part of helping the Bulldogs to the 2008 and 2009 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships.

In between his stints at S.C. State, Williams was the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for four seasons (2010-13) at Kansas, working under coaches Turner Gill and Charlie Weis. He spent six seasons at Baylor (2002-07), serving as Director of Strength & Conditioning for four seasons before being promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for his final two years. Williams also had stops as an assistant strength coach at North Carolina, twice (1997-99, 2000-02), and Oklahoma State (1999-00).

Williams is a 1995 graduate of North Carolina A&T. He has attained the highest level of certification in his profession at Master Level Strength Coach Certified (MSCC) and was one of the youngest strength coaches in the country to achieve this honor.
