Bulldogs Snap Road Skid with Win over Delta Devils

ITTA BENA, Miss. | The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team had four players in double figures as the Bulldogs snapped an eight-game road losing streak on Monday night with a 71-51 victory over Mississippi Valley State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
 
Alabama A&M (8-7 overall, 1-1 SWAC) used a big first-half run and did not look back as the Bulldogs ran their winning streak against the Delta Devils to 10 straight games with the victory.
 
Kintavious Dozier went 10-for-12 at the foul line to finish with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal, while Koron Davis added 14 points, five boards and a pair of steals. Jalen Carruth tossed in a career-high 11 points, including three 3-pointers, five boards, one assist and one steal. Lou Hutchinson chipped in 10 points, two boards, two assists, one block and one steal.
 
Michael James paced Mississippi Valley State with a game-high 22 points, five boards and four assists.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a slow early start, Alabama A&M used a 17-4 run during a five-minute stretch of the opening half to grab a 23-13 advantage after a Bilal Abdur-Rahman triple with 6:22 remaining.
 
Mississippi Valley State (1-15, 0-2) got free throws by Daniel Mayfield and X'Zaevion Barrett, along with a layup by James, to close the gap to 23-18 with just over five minutes to play.
 
But back came the Bulldogs on the heels of five straight points by Jalen Carruth and free throws by PJ Eason to quickly push the lead back to double digits, 30-18 with just over four minutes left.
 
AAMU controlled the final four minutes, outscoring MVSU, 5-1, to take a 35-19 advantage into the break.
 
A Carruth 3-pointer extended AAMU's lead to 44-25 with just under 16 minutes to play, but James continued to carry the Delta Devils as his jumper cut the deficit to 46-32 with 14:09 remaining.  
 
Free throws by Dozier and a dunk by Koron Davis stretched Alabama A&M's advantage to 60-41 with 5:19 left and Mississippi Valley State could not answer over the final five minutes as the Bulldogs snapped an eight-game road losing streak.

  • The Bulldogs grabbed 41 rebounds, with 30 coming on the defensive end
