BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Former Alabama A&M University football standout and Indianapolis Colts legend Robert Mathis has been selected for induction into the 2026 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hall of Fame, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Â
Mathis, one of the most decorated defensive players in Alabama A&M and SWAC football history, headlines a six-member class scheduled to be enshrined on Friday, Dec. 11, at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta, Ga. The ceremony is set to begin at 7 p.m. Eastern and will stream live on SWAC TV.
Â
A four-year starter at Alabama A&M from 1999-2002, Mathis established himself as one of the nation's premier pass rushers, earning three consecutive All-SWAC selections during his collegiate career.
Â
Mathis delivered a historic senior campaign in 2002, recording 20 sacks to establish an NCAA Division I-AA single-season record at the time. He was named SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and captured the Buck Buchanan Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive player at the NCAA Division I-AA level.
Â
The Atlanta, Ga., native concluded his Alabama A&M career with 221 tackles, 88.5 tackles for loss, 44 sacks and 20 forced fumbles, cementing his place among the greatest defensive players to wear the Maroon and White.
Â
Following his outstanding collegiate career, Mathis was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft and went on to spend his entire 14-year professional career with the organization.
Â
During his time in Indianapolis, Mathis became one of the franchise's most accomplished defensive players, earning five Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro honors in 2013. He also helped guide the Colts to a victory in Super Bowl XLI.
Â
Mathis finished his NFL career with 123 sacks and 54 forced fumbles, including an NFL-record 47 sack-forced fumbles. His remarkable 2013 campaign included a league-leading 19.5 sacks.
Â
After retiring following the 2016 season, Mathis continued his involvement with the Colts as a pass-rush consultant, sharing his expertise with the organization's defensive players.
Â
His contributions to the game have earned numerous honors, including induction into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor in 2021 and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.
Â
Mathis' selection to the SWAC Hall of Fame further solidifies his legacy as one of Alabama A&M's most accomplished student-athletes and recognizes his contributions to the Bulldogs, the conference and professional football.
