THE HILL | Four players posted double figures in scoring as the Alabama A&M University men's basketball team split the regular season series with Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Monday night, 82-70, in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game at the AAMU Event Center.
Alabama A&M (15-11 overall, 8-5 SWAC) got a balanced offense and led by two at the break before extending the advantage into double digits with less than four minutes to play. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-15, 8-5) could not recover down the stretch as the Bulldogs earned the home win.
Kintavious Dozier led the way with a double-double of 20 points and 10 boards, while
Koron Davis scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half.
James Graham III added 17 points and
PJ Eason tossed in 16 points.
Alex Mirhosseini paced Arkansas-Pine Bluff with a game-high 26 points, including six 3-pointers. Jaquan Scott tossed in 21 points and seven boards, while Milhan Charles added 11 points.
FIRST HALF
The contest featured nine lead changes and seven ties in a tightly contested opening period.
Graham jump-started the Bulldogs early with a three-pointer at the 18:39 mark to give AAMU a 3-1 lead. The Golden Lions responded, but Dozier and Eason attacked the paint to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance.
Koron Davis knocked down a pair of free throws midway through the half to push AAMU ahead 15-9, capping an early 8-0 scoring run.
UAPB answered behind Alex Mirhosseini, who buried a late three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to trim the margin to 33-31 at the break.
AAMU shot 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the floor in the first half while holding a slight edge on the scoreboard, 33-31.
SECOND HALF
After UAPB briefly tied the game at 33-33, the Bulldogs began to seize control.
Bilal Abdur-Rahman drilled a fast-break three-pointer at the 17:45 mark to ignite the crowd and give AAMU a 38-34 advantage.
Dozier knocked down a triple at 14:31 to reclaim the lead at 46-44, and from there the Bulldogs found another gear. A 3-pointer from Davis at 7:31 extended the lead to 63-55, and AAMU continued to capitalize at the free-throw line down the stretch.
The Bulldogs' biggest lead reached 15 points with 2:37 remaining in the contest, as AAMU outscored UAPB 49-39 in the second half.
