Belton Leads Bulldogs Past Southern in 64–61 Battle

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team secured the last regular season 64–61 win over Southern University on Thursday evening at the AAMU Event Center. 


The Bulldogs applied pressure early, opening the game with a strong first quarter to take a 17–11 lead in the opening period. Alabama A&M maintained its advantage into halftime despite a push from Southern, carrying a 30–29 edge into the break. 


Both teams traded momentum throughout the second half as the contest featured multiple lead changes. Alabama A&M regained control in the third quarter and entered the final period ahead 49–46, setting up a tight finish. 


The Jaguars continued to battle in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to two points in the final seconds, but the Bulldogs held on defensively and sealed the victory shooting 65.7% at the free-throw line to secure the three-point win. 


Jaida Belton led Alabama A&M with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, recording her fifth double-double of the season to anchor the Bulldogs. Kaila Walker added 15 points, while Aniya Palmer chipped in 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. 


Coriah Beck contributed nine points, and Vanessa Wimberly added eight points and eight rebounds as Alabama A&M controlled the boards with 40 total rebounds in the contest. 


With the win, Alabama A&M improved to 21-9 overall and 17-1 in SWAC play.


 UP NEXT

Alabama A&M will hit the road to begin their conference play at the SWAC Tournament. The tournamnet will be hosted in Atlanta, Ga at the Gateway Center Arena and streamed on SWAC TV.
