Brown's Big First Half Carries Alabama A&M Past Bowie State

THE HILL | Cornelious Brown IV completed his first 14 passes and accounted for three touchdowns as the Alabama A&M University football team closed out its three-game homestand with a 45-3 rout of Bowie State on Saturday night at Louis Crews Stadium.

Brown was magnificent in the first half, completing 25 of 32 passes for 350 yards and connecting with eight receivers.

Alabama A&M (3-1) wasted no time finding the end zone, marching 75 yards in three plays to take a 7-0 lead.

Brown opened the drive with a 63-yard pass to Jordan Chambers-Smith, and two plays later, Kolton Nero scored on a 9-yard run with 13:55 remaining in the opening quarter.

After a 66-yard punt by Bowie State's Chris Coleman, AAMU took over at its own 3-yard line and drove 97 yards in eight plays. Brown capped the drive with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jarel Williams, extending the lead to 14-0 with 9:21 left in the first quarter.

AAMU's offense remained in high gear on its third possession. Brown completed his first six passes of the drive and appeared to throw his second touchdown pass, a 22-yarder to Jaylan Bean, but the ruling was overturned to an incomplete pass. David Faulk then converted a 40-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-0 with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Alabama A&M found the end zone again on its fourth possession when Brown scored on a 2-yard run to cap a 10-play, 64-yard drive, pushing the lead to 24-0 with 12:05 remaining in the first half.

Bowie State (0-3) answered with a 15-play drive but stalled at the AAMU 7-yard line. Peter Lipscombe kicked a 24-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 24-3 with 4:49 remaining in the half.

AAMU responded on its next possession as Brown found Chambers-Smith in the corner of the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown. The score capped a six-play, 75-yard drive and extended Alabama A&M's lead to 31-3 with 1:36 remaining in the half.

Alabama A&M carried the momentum into the second half as Mac Armstrong found Chambers-Smith in the left corner of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 38-3 with 8:35 remaining in the third quarter.

AAMU's special teams produced the final score when Alabama A&M blocked a 43-yard field goal attempt by Lipscombe. Jeremiah Hudson-Davis, the Southwestern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, returned the loose ball 82 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 45-3. It marked AAMU's first blocked field goal return for a touchdown since 2005.
