A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Elliott Jones enters his fourth season as head baseball coach at Alabama A&M after being named to that position on October 23, 2020. He brings with him eight years of experience within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) at Grambling State (2018-20) and Southern (2013-17).
Â
GRAMBLING STATE (2018-20, ASSISTANT COACH)
In his time with the Tigers, Jones served under head coach James Cooper and was directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program and essential to player recruitment and development, the latter specifically with outfielders and catchers.
Â
Additionally, he oversaw the academic responsibilities of the program, working closely with the Compliance Office to ensure that GSU’s Academic Progress Reporting (APR) was in good standing.
Â
On the field, he helped lead Grambling to a pair of SWAC West Division Runner-Up finishes in 2018 and 2019. The program would finish 26-26 overall and 14-10 in league play that first year and follow with a 26-25 performance and an impressive 16-8 SWAC effort in GSU’s 2019 campaign.
Â
SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY (2013-17, ASSISTANT COACH)
As a member of the Jaguars coaching staff under the legendary Roger Cador for four of his 33 seasons, and Kerrick Jackson for one, Jones played a vital role across numerous fronts in the program.
Â
Among his responsibilities were overseeing the day-to-day operations, recruiting hitters, outfielders and catchers and also handling aspects of fundraising, budgets, travel and the ordering of equipment. He also directed numerous camps and showcases within the program.
Â
In helping to develop competitive teams during those five years, Jones also helped produce a number of high level players. Among those were at least seven All-SWAC selections in John Pope (2018), Jose DelaTorre and Dondravas Harris (2016), Lance Jones and Santos Saldivar (2015), Tyler Kirksey (2014) and Brian Rowry (2013).
Â
Among those, Jones was drafted in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and Saldivar earned a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Perhaps most importantly, he also played a significant role in more than 20 of the program’s student-athletes earning their degrees during his time on The Bluff.
Â
COLLEGIATE PLAYING CAREER: SOUTHERN (2008-12)
Over the course of three seasons playing first base for Cador, Jones batted .308, earned a SWAC All-Tournament selection and a pair of SWAC All-Academic honors.
Â
HIGH SCHOOL PLAYING CAREER: HUNTINGTON HIGH SCHOOL (SHREVEPORT, LA.)
A two-sport star at Huntington High School in Shreveport, Louisiana, Jones played both football and baseball and left a mark on both programs. He is the football program’s all-time leading passer and ranks second all-time in career batting average between the lines, trailing only former MLB great Albert Belle.
