Roosevelt (Cal) Cochran enters his third season as the Associate Head Coach at Alabama A&M University, and brings along a variety of coaching experience on multiple levels, including the same role with the Nigerian National Olympic Team prior to coming to Huntsville.
 
During his previous two seasons on “The Hill”, Cochran has coached and mentored several student-athletes, including Chad Moodie and Lorenzo Downey. In 2024, Moodie was selected the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Year and earned the team’s most improved award. Downey also garnered major honors, earning a spot on the 2024 SWAC Men’s Basketball Tournament Team.
 
In addition, Cochran also elevated the status of several future professional athletes.
 
Xavier Brewer was chosen to the 2023 NBA Detroit Pistons Summer League team, while Blaise Akonobi was selected in the 2023 NBA G League Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers organization’s Grand Rapid Gold, with the 14th overall selection. Also, Garrett Hicks signed a professional contract in 2024 with the BC Rashi Tibillsi in the overseas country of Georgia.
 
Prior to coming to Alabama A&M, Cochran won nearly 300 games as a head coach during his career, along with a four-year playing career at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
 
While with the Nigerian National Team, he assisted in administration and complete application of basketball systems, to include skills improvement programs, practice schemes, and in game strategies that included scouting reports, staff professional enlargement and fundraising, among other duties.
 
Cochran is also part of the Frontcourt Management Group located in Daytona Beach, Fla. where he is an International Coaching Consultant, serving on several community boards and committees to provide support to several charities in Volusia County. He also consulted with coaches for fitness regimen to enhance abilities, limit injuries, increase longevity, and promote self-esteem internationally.
 
In addition, Cochran coached on both women and men staffs at Daytona State College, serving as the assistant coach for the men from 2007-08, before being named the head women’s coach, a position he held from 2008-16.
 
While at Daytona State, he managed all aspects of basketball operations to include supervising staff, game management, coaching, recruiting, upskilling, and performance. He also monitored study table schedules, tutorial appointments, progress reports and weekly meetings with players.
 
Also during his tenure with the Falcons, Cochran won four conference titles and was named Mid-Florida Conference Coach of the Year four times along with being a finalist for National Coach of the Year once.
 
Cochran also previously served as an assistant coach under Rob Spivery at the University of Montevallo and Alabama State University.
 
During his collegiate career, Cochran starred at the point guard spot at UT-Chattanooga, where he helped the Mocs win a pair of Southern Conference titles along with two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He is also a member of the UTC Hall of Fame.
 
He holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from Chattanooga and received his master's degree in education from the University of West Florida. Cochran is married to the former Andrea Jackson and has three sons, Calvin III, Caleb, and Jonathan.
