Devarus Walker

Devarus Walker begins his first season as an assistant coach at Alabama A&M University.
 
Walker comes to The Hill after serving three years as an assistant coach at Grambling State University, where he helped the Tigers win the 2023-24 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season and men’s basketball tournament as GSU advanced to the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament.

Before Grambling State, Walker spent the previous five seasons at Stillman College. While at Stillman, he helped guide them to a 112-34 overall record with five NAIA National Tournament appearances with their farthest appearance being the Sweet 16 in 2021. He also recruited and coached several Player of the Year, All Americans and All conferences players. 
 
Before Stillman College, Walker spent a year at Jones College (MS) guiding them to a 29-2 overall record, a state and regional championship, along with a Sweet 16 appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament. 
 
Prior to Jones College, Walker, a former East Central CC (MS) basketball standout, spent four years at his alma mater as an assistant to his former coach, Maurice Bowie, and Robert Thompson. He was a member of the Warriors basketball and tennis team from 2007 to 2009.
 
Walker brings an outstanding track record of player development, having coached several players to Division 1 institutions such as Big South, Conference USA, SEC, Southland, SWAC, WAC, and other 4-year institutions as well.
 
Walker is a native of Hickory, Mississippi, and a 2007 graduate of Newton County HS. He was a standout in basketball and tennis, in which he won several state tennis championships. He received honors in both sports. 
 
Walker earned an associate degree in Liberal Arts at East Central CC in 2009 and a bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at William Carey in 2012, where he also played basketball and tennis. He received his Master's Degree in Sports Administration during the Spring of 2024 from Grambling State.

He is married to Charmayne Walker, and they have 2 sons, Hunter and Bryce.
