It was a weekend of ‘could have been’ for the Bulldogs tennis team. After falling to UAH
on Friday, the men’s team had an opportunity to get a win against Cumberland
on Saturday. Instead, it turned into a 1-5 loss in a shortened format match.
“Cumberland came in short-handed, having lost their #1 player to severe cramps in the UAH match,” commented a disappointed Thomas Colvin. “We had the opportunity and didn’t capitalize on it.”
Bulldogs 1, 2, and 3 singles opened the door towards victories, but could never seem to walk through. Freshman Desta Sandy played an inspired first set in winning 6-0 before falling 3-6, 3-6 in the final 2 sets.
Freshman Nicholas Burger found himself down 5-2 in the first before rallying to close to 5-4 with some spirited, aggressive movement inside the baseline; however he was unable to sustain the momentum and fell in straight sets.
Stevon Walker at #3 singles lost the first set, then with some strong groundstrokes and accurate passing shots, took the 2nd set decisively, before letting the match slip away in the 3rd.
“We were close,” Colvin said, “we just have to finish each point and learn how to win.”
The Bulldogs will next host Western Kentucky on March 10.
