A&M Basketball Plays at Prairie View

HOUSTON – The Maroon & White basketball teams will take on the Panthers of Prairie View A&M University on Monday, Jan. 31, at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. This is the final contests in the state of Texas in the regular season for the Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs secured their 10th victory of the season and their sixth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference as junior guard Whiquitta Tobar knocked down a running jumper to give A&M the win over the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern. Tobar continues to lead the team averaging 17.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Prairie View is currently in third place of the SWAC standings sitting behind the Lady Bulldogs with an identical 6-2 league record. The winner of this match-up will take sole possession of second place at the mid-point of the conference season.

The A&M men’s team three game win streak was snapped by the Tigers Saturday night to give them their seventh road loss this season.

The Bulldogs trailed 34-30 at intermission but was able to tie the game a couple of times in the second half, the last time at 54 apiece on a 3-pointer by Desmond Jackson with 4:01 remaining.  The Tigers then scored seven unanswered points to go up 61-54, but A&M battled back and pulled within 61-59 on a layup by DeMarquelle Tabb with 46 seconds left, but couldn't get any closer.

"Free throws cost us," head coach Vann Pettaway said after watching Bulldogs convert just 7-of-16 from the charity stripe. "We had a couple of lapses on defense that led to a couple of 3-pointers and a dunk. Those plays and our inability to hit free throws were the difference in the game."

Pettaway and his assistant coaches participated in the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign by wearing tennis shoes on the sideline.

Senior Bo Amusa scored a season high 16 points while freshman Jerome Hunter pulled in a team high six rebounds.

The team report suggests Prairie View A&M is dangerous for the sheer amount of 3-pointers it attempts. At 7.32 per game, its average easily was the most in the SWAC through Jan. 26. The Panthers was shooting only 31.1 percent, but if it gets hot, it could be a load for A&M to handle. Prairie View is also a good ball-handling team, so guard defense will be a critical point for the Bulldogs.
