BATON ROUGE, LA – In their first Southwestern Athletic Conference football game of 2011 the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University fell 21-6 to Southern University in their home and conference opener.

Not since September 18, 2010 versus Texas Southern has the Maroon & White been held without a touchdown and less than 100 yards rushing on the ground. Junior Terrell Badie led all rushers with 39 yards on six carries.

Starting quarterback Deaunte Mason threw the ball 44 times but completed 20 for 280 yards.

Freshman Rashad DeJarnett led all Bulldog receivers with 5 receptions for 52 yards. Redshirt freshman Montarius Smith posted five catches for 51 yards.

Defensively A&M held SU to a season low 26 yards off of 22 total carries by the Jaguars. But it was the 332 passing yards and three touchdowns that ended the bid for the Bulldogs first win.

Junior linebacker Denzel Cotton led the team with seven tackles (three solo, four assisted).

Of the 11 possessions for the Anthony Jones led squad there were four punts, three ended on failed fourth down conversions, a fumble and a missed field goal. Only two produced points on the scoreboard.

The SWAC’s special teams player of the week Chance Wilson hit a 27 and a 34 yard field goal, his third and fourth of the season. Wilson was A&M’s only point’s producer of the evening.

The Bulldogs will regroup and prepare for their home opener in the Second Annual Louis Crews Classic versus in-state rival Tuskegee University. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
