Women's soccer pounds Jackson State, 4-0

Box Score

Jackson, MS- The Alabama A&M women’s soccer team took on Jackson State University Sunday afternoon and finished victorious. The Lady Bulldogs pounded the Lady Tigers into a 4-0 defeat to give JSU their first Southwestern Athletic Conference loss of 2012.

Having not beaten the Lady Tigers in regular season play in over five years, the Maroon and White were hungry for a win. It was homecoming and senior day for the undefeated Jackson State, making the game all the more important. With this in mind and coming off their second win of the season against Southern University, A&M came out ready to pull off the upset.

The Lady Bulldogs were eager for a goal in the first half, getting off eight shots, with five forcing great saves from JSU keeper, Taylor Emerson. Emerson came up big keeping a clean sheet in the first half, saving multiple shots by the Lady Bulldogs that looked to be sure goals.

Opposite Emerson, A&M keeper, Linda Aboagye was also up to the task, saving each of the Lady Tigers’ three shots on goal. The first half ended in a scoreless tie, as neither team was willing to go down.

In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs changed the tide of the game. A&M began the half searching for a goal. Their search ended in the 55th minute as defender Zenabu Musa headed a free ball into the JSU net. Musa scored her first goal of the season to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 1-0.

AAMU never looked back after the Musa goal, quadrupling their lead before the final whistle. The Lady Bulldogs won in convincing fashion as they pounded their previously undefeated SWAC foe 4-0.

With the win, the Lady Bulldogs are in position to finish in first place in the conference’s Eastern division.

The last time the Maroon and White finished first after regular season play was 2007. That campaign was also the second time A&M won the women’s soccer crown.

The Maroon and White will close their season next weekend as they host division rivals Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State on October 26thand 28th respectively. Both games will take place at Lady Bulldog field and begin at 1:00 pm.
