Lady Bulldogs Soccer Steals Win in Overtime From Alcorn State

Box Score Normal- In a thriller, the Alabama A&M women’s soccer team stole a win from the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University at Lady Bulldog field on Friday.

In the first half Lady Bulldogs were able to get off six shots while the Lady Braves took four. During the half, the Maroon & White had two shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. A&M goalie, Linda Aboagye tallied three saves.

Usually for A&M, the Lady Bulldogs were caught offsides more than five times for the first time this season. They were whistled nine total times alone in the first 45-minute period.

The second half is when the action truly began. With only 1:08 ticked off after the whistle blew for the second half, the Lady Braves found the back of the net on a shot by Chavon Douglas. Douglas’ shot beat second half keeper, Marissa Oehler, on the first shot she faced.

A&M then found themselves playing from behind for the first time in three games. However, falling behind did not scare AAMU into retreat as the Maroon & White responded immediately with a shot just 11 seconds later, which was blocked by an Alcorn defender.

A&M went on to attack the Alcorn defense feverishly. The Lady Bulldogs’ shots rained down on the Alcorn goal; yet none found the back of the net.  Not until the 86:21 mark on the clock was when Nycole Henderson was able to float a ball up and over sliding Alcorn keeper, Ashley Murray, and into the net leveling the playing field at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score again before the game’s end, leading to the first overtime period for the Lady Bulldogs this season.

The extra soccer did not disappoint, although there were only a total three shots as play was intense. The Lady Braves took the first two shots of the period; the second coming dangerously close to scoring and ending the game, nearly squashing A&M’s chance at finishing first in the division. The final shot of the period, and subsequently the game came from senior Hernandez Haughton.

Haughton’s fourth shot was of the utmost importance, as it ended the game with heartbreak for the Lady Braves and elation for the Lady Bulldogs. Haughton found the back of the net, beating the Alcorn keeper with just five seconds left.

The win gives the Frank Davies squad a 4-12 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the Eatsern division.  With Mississippi Valley’s recent loss to Alabama State A&M has a chance to claim the first place spot before the start of the soccer conference championship.

The final regular season contest for the Lady Bulldogs will be Sunday, October 28th, as they host Mississippi Valley on senior day. This contest will kick off at 1:00 p.m. and can be followed via live stats.
