Women's soccer ends season with SWAC tournament loss

Alexandria, La- It was a hot and sunny day as the Lady Bulldogs opened the 2012 SWAC Soccer Tournament against the Lady Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Lady Bulldogs arrived to the field early in preparation for their first post-season game since the 2010 season.

In the tournament opener, A&M was faced with an aggressive opponent in UAPB. Pine Bluff committed 10 fouls and earned five yellow cards on the day. Despite the hostile play from the Golden Lions, the Maroon & White dominated the majority of possession and controlled the flow of the game.

However, they found themselves trailing after giving up two goals during dead ball scenarios.

UAPB’s junior midfielder Czelene Carrera scored both first half goals, seven minutes apart. Carrera struck first in the 23^rd minute, then again in the 30^thminute to close scoring for the half. A&M took a two-nil deficit into the half-time break.

Possibly playing in their final 45 minutes of the 2012 season, the Lady Bulldogs came out with increased intensity. It was evident; the Maroon & White were not ready to end their season as they nearly tripled their first half shot output and earned two more corner kicks in their search for a goal.

A&M scored on a penalty kick in the 75^thminute, earned by senior defender, Zenabu Musa.

Freshman Ana Huertas stepped up to convert the penalty kick bringing A&M back in the fight. With just 14 minutes to go, the Lady Bulldogs again stepped up their intensity in search for an equalizing goal.

Unfortunately, the Maroon & White were unable to score during the final minutes of play.

The Lady Bulldogs came agonizingly close to scoring the game tying goal that would extend their season. A&M kept the fight alive, with their final chance coming with just 14 seconds left on the clock.

A&M put up a valiant effort, but was unable to overcome the two-goal deficit that they faced in the first half. A 2-1 defeat by the Golden Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff ended the Lady Bulldogs’ 2012 season.
