Normal- The Alabama A&M men and women’s track team opened their season this weekend at the Birmingham Southern College Panther Ice Breaker. The BSC hosted meet was held at the Birmingham Crossplex Multipurpose  Athletic and meeting facility in Birmingham, Alabama

The Bulldogs competed against over 20 teams at the meet, including several Divisions I programs such as conference rival, Alabama State.

“I feel relieved we’ve gotten a meet under our belt,” mentioned head coach Kim Seals. “This gives the kids an opportunity to see what they need to work on and what they have accomplished thus far.”

The 15 year head coach named Shaquina Phalo and Donte McDaniel her most valuable runners of the meet. Phalo finished in sixth place in the one-mile run with a time of 5:22.91, just one second off her personal record.

“I’m really excited. I ran a really good mile this weekend. I was one second away from my personal best and it’s the beginning of the season”, says Phalo. “In order to continue this high performance throughout the year I have to stay positive. I have to put in the work day in and day out.”

McDaniel recorded the best finish for the men’s team with a fifth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.30 seconds.

“As a whole we did pretty well; but we still have a lot of work to do. The potential is there, and the work has to be there. We have to practice every day, get in the weight room every day, and we have to be mentally strong,” stated McDaniel.

“Physically we are not prepared, mentally we are. We have to work on technique in every aspect,” says McDaniel when asked about the team’s performance at their first meet.

The Bulldog indoor track teams will be back in action January 5th, when they compete in the Ed Temple Classic hosted by Tennessee State University.
