Alabama A&M Volleyball opens with season opening loss

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Alabama A&M volleyball opened the 2012 season falling to Belmont University in three games in the second match of the fifth annual Belmont Invitational, 25-22, 25-18, 27-25.
A&M jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Belmont answered tying the score before the Lady Bulldogs scored two unanswered points.

Belmont battled back to take its first lead of the set, but a service error tied the set at 15. The Bruins capitalized on two consecutive attack errors to take a two-point lead that the team would not relinquish to close out the opening set, 25-22.

A block started a 3-0 run for the Bruins in the second game. Belmont then took a 9-4 lead over the Lady Bulldogs before they could answer by scoring four unanswered points.  The lead would not leave the home team as the Nedra Brown led squad fell 25-18 in the second set.

The Maroon & White came back from the break going on a 3-0 run but their run was ended by a kill from the Bruins. The Lady Bulldogs bounced back to score four consecutive points but kills by the host team ended their run and brought Belmont within five.

The two teams battled back and forth, with each going on short runs. Two errors from the Lady Bulldogs allowed Belmont to pull within one point, 20-19. Back-to-back kills gave the Bruins a 21-20 lead. The two teams exchanged points before Belmont closed out the set with a 27-25 win.

Senior Clarissa Moore led A&M with 12 kills and 13 digs.  Junior setter Ashley Forman started the 2012 year with 28 assists.

AAMU will start the action tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. game against Texas Christian University then complete the opening invitational with a 3:30 p.m. match versus Northern Colorado in the Curb Event Center.
