Women’s soccer drops two, but gains in defeat

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Normal- The Alabama A&M women’s soccer team remained winless this weekend as they dropped games to both Murray State University and Austin Peay University.

On Friday, September 14th the Lady Bulldogs traveled to Murray, KY to face the Racers of Murray State University. A&M was defeated 5-0 by the Lady Racers.

The Maroon & White allowed four second half goals, after going down 1-0 in the first half. Goalie Linda Aboagye played the full 90 minutes and recorded five saves. Senior Nycole Henderson tallied the lone shot for the Lady Bulldogs in the first half.

On Sunday, A&M traveled to Clarksville, TN to take on the Governors of Austin Peay University. The Maroon & White were defeated 6-1 by the Governors, and fell to 0-8 on
the year.

The Lady Bulldogs started the game slow; giving up three goals in the first 15 minutes of play with the first coming only 43 seconds into the game. However, they responded in a way so far unseen in the 2012 season, with a goal.

A&M was able to break the “seal” and score that elusive first goal of the year. Midfielder Ana Huertas was able to find the back of the net at the 16:46 mark after a great thru pass from senior Nycole Henderson.

“The team attacked well today, they made numerous runs from the midfield as we spoke about earlier in the week, and that paid off,” stated Head Coach Frank Davies. “Hopefully we will see more goals from here on,” Davies added.

Huertas mentioned, “It feels good to get the first goal, but we didn’t win so it almost doesn’t matter, but it is ok because it was our first goal of the season so I hope it gives us motivation for our upcoming games.”

After scoring the first goal, the Lady Bulldogs played with a renewed purpose. The play picked up on both sides of the ball. A&M got the ball in the attacking third with more consistency, and the defense became more aggressive.

Junior Amber Irvin and freshman keeper Marissa Oehler led the Maroon & White defensively. Oehler anchored the defense and recorded five saves in the second half only allowing one shot to sneak past her into the net. Irvin played with increased ferocity, shutting down any attacker that came her way. Irvin was also able to clear a ball off the goal line, keeping the second half goal tally to one, after a shot got past Oehler at the top of the box.

The Lady Bulldogs made great improvements this weekend, and will be back in action on Friday, September 20th as they take on the University of Missouri-Kansas City
.
