Soccer Falls to Winthrop 11-1

Box Score

Normal- The Alabama A&M women's soccer team scored their first goal of the season, but it wasn't enough; losing to Winthrop 11-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The game stated off very slow for the Maroon & White. They lacked energy and played with a lethargic will. Winthrop opened scoring in the 22 minute on a Krystyna Freda shot.  Three minutes later they struck again by way of Taylor Walton. A third goal came by way of a penalty shot after senior defender Samatra Spires, committed a handball within the 18-yard block.

To break up the Eagles scoring run, freshman Estelle Esperance scored the first Lady Bulldog goal of the season. After beating a defender at the top of the box, Esperance slipped a shot passed the outstretched right arm and leg of WU keeper Amelia Henderson.

"I feel like I accomplished something, this being my first collegiate goal ever. It is a small step on my journey to completing my big Olympic and world cup dreams" smiles Estelle Esperance, as she talks about today's match.

Five minutes later the score again changed in favor of WU and the Maroon & White took a 4-1 deficit into the half-time break.

The second half fatigue played a major role. The short-bench A&M squad was run ragged by the 30 women Winthrop squad. Despite not giving up, the multiple substitutions by the visiting Eagles proved too much. The Lady Bulldogs fell to 0-6 after losing Sunday afternoon's contest 11-1.

The Maroon & White will return to the pitch Friday, September 13, when they host East Tennessee at 1:00 p.m.
