2014 Women's Volleyball Tournament Preview

BIRMINGHAM, Ala – The 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference volleyball tournament will take place November 22-23 in Baton Rouge, La. The double elimination contest will be held at the Clifford Seymour Gymnasium and the Horace H. Moody Intramural Center. The top four teams from the eastern and western divisions (eight total) have qualified for the tournament based on conference results.

The Alabama State women's volleyball team earned the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference, Eastern Division, season championship November 6 at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium. The Hornets defeated state rival, Alabama A&M, 3-2. This marks the Hornets' second consecutive eastern division title. This team meet up (AAMU/ASU) was the exact match that decided the fate of the Hornets in 2013. That match a year ago also ended, 3-2, in favor of State.

Texas Southern gained the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference, Western Division, season championship November 6th at H&PE Arena. The Tigers swept Grambling State, 3-0. This also marked the Tigers' second consecutive western division title. In 2013, Texas Southern challenged Arkansas-Pine Bluff and ended with a victorious sweep, 25-19, 25-22, and 25-2

Match Previews

#3 Southern vs. #2 Alabama A&M 
The Jaguars are scheduled to play the Bulldogs in the third match of the tournament at 11:00 a.m. in the Clifford Seymour Gymnasium (court one). Like the matchups before, this will be the first time both teams go head-to-head this season. Southern will be led by Marisol Macias. Macias is ranked in the top ten in conference kills (eighth with 191). She is second in digs for the Jaguars with 170 and has a total of 27 blocks. Marcias leads the team with 215 points, averaging 2.69 per set. Alabama A&M's top athlete is Kyanna Sales. Sales is second in kills for the conference (277) and fifth in total points. She was named to the North Carolina A&T Volleyball Tournament.
