HOUSTON, Texas -- Freshman
Jordan Bentley scored four touchdowns but a 51-yard field goal by Texas Southern's Eric Medina as time ran out lifted the Tigers to a 34-31 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Bentley also rushed for 114 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback
De'Angelo Ballard had a strong performance. He was 21 of 37 for 309 yards with one TD and no interceptions.
After giving up a touchdown on their first defensive series, the Bulldogs marched back on a 13--play, 84-yard drive capped by Ballard's 26-yard screen pass to Bentley for a touchdown. But
Nick Carden's point-after attempt hit the right upright, making the score 7-6 with six minutes left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the third quarter when they opened the second half with a seven-play, 65-yard drive. Bentley scored on a 20-yard run and the point-after gave A&M a 13-7 lead with 12 minutes left in the quarter.
But, the Tigers countered with a touchdown and then, a misplayed kickoff return attempt by the Bulldogs led to a Texas Southern field goal and a 17-13 lead with 6:58 left in the third quarter.
Carden's 30-yard field goal with 5 seconds left in the quarter cut the lead to 17-16, setting up a wild fourth quarter.
Texas Southern ran the score to 24-16 on a touchdown just nine seconds into the quarter.
Then, the Bulldogs drove 75 yards in six plays and Bentley's 10-yard TD run made the score 24-22. Ballard scored the two-point conversion for a 24-24 score with 13:16 left in the game.
The Bulldogs' defense forced Texas Southern to punt in a series that took just 10 seconds.
A&M took a 31-24 lead with 7:30 to play when Bentley scored on a 13-yard run for his fourth touchdown of the night. But the Tigers marched back to tie the score with 2:25 left on the clock.
The Bulldogs were forced to punt on the ensuing possession, enabling Texas Southern to take over and move in for the game-winner.
The Bulldogs host Alcorn State next Saturday for Homecoming. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
