Bulldogs drop season opener at Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A pair of freshmen led three Bulldogs in double-figure scoring Friday but A&M fell to Missouri State 96-62 in the season opener for both teams.

Senior center Quinterian McConico scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds while freshman De'Ederick Petty also had 14 points and freshman Tracey Burnett added 10 points. Rakiya Battle chipped in with a game-high six assists.

Eugene Jones Jr. scored the first points of the game to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. The two teams were tied at 6-6 when the Bears went on a 14-2 run for a 20-8 lead with 12:01 left in the first half.

Burnett scored the final points in the half on a layup with 27 seconds left and the Bulldogs went into intermission trailing 45-32.

The Bulldogs came out cold in the second half and the Bears built a 63-35 lead with about 14 minutes left in the game.

Missouri State was led by six players in double figures.

The Bulldogs return to the court Sunday at Missouri. Tipoff is 7 p.m. and the game can be seen on the SEC Network Alternate Channel.
