Story Links

HUNTSVILLE –-- The Alabama A&M volleyball team concluded the regular season Tuesday by falling in four sets (25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 21-25) to visiting Southern University on Senior Night to determine the No. 3 seed.

The Lady Bulldogs secured the No. 4 seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a regular season mark of 12-21, 11-7 SWAC.

Senior Ashundria McNeal, playing in her final match on "The Hill", was honored in a pre-match ceremony by Head Coach Rose Powell, her teammates, family and nearly 300 fans in Elmore Gym. McNeal continued her stellar play finishing with 17 kills and 18 digs for the Lady Bulldogs.

A&M jumped on top of the Jaguars early in the first set after seeing 12 ties and six lead changes. Trailing 20-19, A&M went on a 5-0 run forcing Southern to call a timeout. The Jaguars responded with a kill and capitalized on an A&M set error, but McNeal notched a kill to give the Lady Bulldogs the 25-22 win.

In the second set, Southern took an early 3-1 lead. After exchanging points, A&M responded with a 6-4 run to tie the game at eight. Tied at eight, a trio of A&M errors and a Jaguar kill would give Southern a 12-10 lead in which they would continue to extend for a 25-21 win. The Jaguars went on to take sets three and four to close out the victory.

Sophomore Jaelin Gant notched her third double-double of the season with a 10-kill, 21-dig performance. Junior Courtney Oliver added 9 kills and five blocks. Junior Riley Balsmeyer collected 38 assists, while Freshman Nina Biggs picked up 9 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs held a 68-61 advantage in digs and a 14-10 advantage in blocks. The Jaguars led 45-44 in kills, and they owned the higher attack percentage .116 to .045.
