Williams’ Buzzer Beater Gives Women’s Basketball 68-65 Win Over Oakwood

HUNTSVILLE --- Junior transfer Hilary Williams drilled a three-pointer as time expired in overtime to give the Alabama A&M women's basketball  team a 68-65 win over Oakwood on Tuesday evening at T.M. Elmore Gym. After trailing the majority of the contest, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves tied 65-65 with nine seconds to go before Williams was able to hit the game-winning shot.

Williams finished the game with 10 points and nine rebounds to go alongside Jameica Cobb's 18 points and nine rebounds. Fifth year senior Ebony Johnson had a season-high 17 points and nine rebounds, while Freshman Alisha Davis had 11 points and nine boards.

Oakwood was led by 16 points from Jacqui Jones and 14 points from Simone Brown. Alize' Perry rounded out the top scorers with 12 points, while Brown led with 11 rebounds.

After a tough shooting day against Alabama on Sunday, AAMU bounced back to hit 29-of-78 field goal attempts including a 11-of-34 effort in the first half. Defensively, the Lady Bulldogs held Oakwood to just 32.8 percent shooting (21-of-64) for the game, though the Lady Ambassadors did hit 6-of-13 three pointers.

"I'm just glad the ladies never gave up and they fought to the end," Head Coach Margaret Richards said. "I was very disappointed about the free throws and missed layups. "We are very young and we have to get back to the drawing board and get back in the gym and practice making free throws."

The Lady Bulldogs trailed Oakwood 57-61 with 32 seconds left in regulation when Cobb made a layup and drew the foul. Cobb made the first free throw to cut the Lady Ambassadors lead to one. With four seconds remaining in the fourth, Johnson was fouled and made a free throw to send the game into OT.

In overtime, Oakwood jumped on top and led by one, 65-64 with 1:10 to go. Davis drove the ball in the paint, drew the foul, and made one free throw to tie the game 65-65. Davis missed her second free throw and Williams grabbed the offensive rebound to keep possession for the Lady Bulldogs. With nine seconds remaining, Williams launched her second 3-point attempt of the night as the buzzer sounded to secure the victory.

"At the end of the day, I am proud of a very young team that fought back from being down 12 to 14 points and never giving up," Richards said.

The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Dec. 3 when they travel to Birmingham to take on Samford University at noon.
