Women's Basketball Falls to Samford

BIRMINGHAM --- The Alabama A&M women's basketball team fell 61-37 to Samford Saturday afternoon at Pete Hanna Stadium in Birmingham in non-conference action. A&M falls 2-5 overall and Samford improves 4-4 on the year.

Freshman Jameica Cobb (Greenville, Fl.) led AAMU with 12 points while securing four rebounds. Senior Josta Totten (Itta Bena, Miss.) contributed nine points making 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Junior Hilary Williams(Moultrie, Ga.) added eight points, four rebounds, and three assists while Senior Ebony Johnson(Atlanta, Ga.) chipped in six rebounds and four points.

In the closely matched first period, Josta Totten three-pointer cut an early Samford lead to 6-4. With 2:13 left in the opening period, Cobb's jumper tied the game at 6-6. Back-to-Back buckets from Cobb allowed A&M to take their first lead of the game. At the end of the first period, the Lady Bulldogs led 10-6.

The Samford Bulldogs responded with two baskets to start the second period and tie the game at 10. A steal and layup by Cobb followed by a jumper allowed A&M to regain a 14-10 lead. Totten made a three-pointer with 3:17 remaining in the second period to extend A&M'S lead, 21-16. The team's continued to trade points before Asiah Oden's free throw gave A&M a 26-21 lead at the half.

Samford came out hot in the third period and retook control, starting the third on a 12-2 run and later stretching the advantage to as many as 26 at 49-23. In the fourth, Samford never let A&M get any closer than 11 points. A&M was held to just 21 percent in the fourth period in field goal shooting.  Samford continued to extend their lead, securing the 61-37 victory lead over A&M.

A&M hits the road again on Dec. 19 visiting host Southeast Missouri State University before closing the year out at Evansville.
