Bulldogs lose pitching duels in sweep by UAPB

PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- The Bulldogs turned in fine pitching performances Saturday but Arkansas-Pine Bluff was just a little better in a doubleheader sweep.

The Golden Lions won the first game 4-3 in 10 innings and took the second game 1-0.

The two teams wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.

UAPB 4, A&M 3, 10 innings

UAPB scored on a one-out, RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to take the win.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first when Eugene Freeman had a game-opening triple and scored one out later on Tanner Ivey's ground out.

A&M starting pitcher Josh Burchell struck out the side in the bottom of the inning and the Bulldogs put another run on the board in the top of the second.

With one out, Carlton Peppers and Nolan Ramsey hit back-to-back singles. Boston Martinez-Neal followed with a double to rightfield, scoring Peppers for a 2-0 lead.
UAPB scored in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 2-2.

In the top of the seventh, Peppers drilled a one-out double to right-center and Ramsey brought him home with a single to the gap for a 3-2 A&M lead.

However, UAPB answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the seventh to deadlock the game.

The Bulldogs mounted a threat in the eighth inning when J.T. O'Reel led off with a double and Tanner Ivey was hit by a pitch. Dylan Payne's sacrifice bunt moved the runners, but they were left stranded.

Burchell scattered nine hits over 7 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing two earned runs. Brandon Marsonek came on in relief in the eighth inning.

UAPB 1, A&M 0

Tyler Chatman and Caleb Roberts had strong outings but a lone UAPB run in the third inning proved to be the game winner.

The Bulldogs left four runners in scoring position, including Nolan Ramsey at third after his sixth-inning triple.

Ramsey and J.T. O'Reel each had two hits for A&M; O'Reel struck out in the first inning - his first strikeout this season in his 112th at-bat.

Chatman gave up just three hits while striking out two in three innings. Roberts allowed two hits and struck out two in his five-inning appearance.
