UAPB rallies to beat Bulldogs

PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Arkansas-Pine Bluff rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday to take a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs and sweep their three-game series.

A&M fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but tied the game in the fifth inning when J.T. O'Reel led off with a single. Carlton Peppers moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt and Tanner Ivey followed with a triple to right field to score O'Reel. But Ivey was left at third after a strikeout and a flyout ended A&M's scoring threat.

In the sixth inning, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead. Ryan Thrasher led off with a single and, one out later, Brandon Whitaker singled. Eugene Freeman's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base and Thrasher later scored on a wild pitch. But the inning ended with Whitaker stranded at third.

The Bulldogs would leave runners in scoring position again in the seventh and ninth innings. Earlier in the game, A&M left the bases loaded in the first inning and runners in scoring position in the second and fifth innings.

O'Reel had three hits, including a double; Ivey had a single to go with his RBI triple; and Peppers and Whitaker each also had two hits.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday at Tennessee Tech and Wednesday at Eastern Kentucky.

They host Mississippi Valley State this weekend in a four-game series (including a makeup game from last month at MVSU) to close out the home schedule.
