Bulldogs' late-game rally comes up short at Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- When Tennessee Tech took a 9-0 lead after two innings Tuesday night, the Bulldogs could've folded up the tent and gone through the motions the rest of the game.

Then, when it got to 11-0, they could have mailed it in, especially in light of last week's 34-6 loss to Tennessee Tech.

However, A&M didn't back down. Their pitching arms got hot and their bats got hotter.

The Golden Eagles, though, held on and survived the Bulldogs' comeback attempt, 11-6.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the eighth - keyed by Pierre Brewton's bases-loaded double - and two more in the ninth before Tennessee Tech closed the door, leaving a pair of Bulldogs stranded on the bases.

A&M, which has now lost 12 straight, had its chances early in the game, but left the bases loaded in the second and third innings.

In the eighth inning, Tanner Ivey and Dylan Payne reached base when they were hit by pitches. With two outs, Eric Yarbrough singled to score Ivey. Ryan Thrasher followed with a sharp single to left to load the bases.

Brewton then doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and cut the Tech lead to 11-4.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the top of the ninth. Carlton Peppers led off with a single and scored on Ivey's triple in the right-center gap. Payne followed with a double to bring Ivey home. However, after a walk to Tyler Chatman, the next three A&M batters went down to end the game.

Peppers had three hits, including his double and Payne, J.T. O'Reel and Yarbrough each had two hits.

The Bulldogs will visit Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
