Bulldogs outslug Delta Devils

HUNTSVILLE -- The Bulldogs brought out the lumber or, rather, the composite Friday to the tune of eight extra-base hits - including three home runs - in a 10-6 win over Mississippi Valley State.

The Bulldogs and Delta Devils will play a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday and a series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The win increased A&M's hold on fourth place in the SWAC East Division over the fifth-place Delta Devils (2-13) to 3 1/2 games.

Going into the weekend, the Bulldogs (4-8) were just 2 1/2 games behind second-place Alcorn State and Jackson State, both 6-6. They play each other this weekend in Jackson, Miss.

The top four teams in each division qualify for the SWAC Tournament.

Carlton Peppers led Friday's hit parade with a 4-for-5 day, including a double and his first home run of the season. Tanner Ivey was 3-for-5 with his fourth home run of the year and 3 RBIs; Eugene Freeman had three hits, including a pair of triples, and three RBIs; Cornelius Woods hit his second homer of the year; and Nolan Ramsey had a pair of doubles.

Tyler Chatman picked up his first win of the season, going 7 innings and giving up just four hits and two runs, one was earned.

The game was tight early, with the teams tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs took a 4-2 lead on Woods' solo homer - a line drive over the left-field fence - and an RBI triple by Freeman.

Peppers' home run in the fifth spotted A&M to a 5-2 lead and the Bulldogs ran the score to 8-2 with a three-run sixth inning.

However, MVSU made things interesting with a four-run eighth inning to cut the A&M lead to 8-6.

The Bulldogs responded with Ivey's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth for the final 10-6 score.
