Stubberfield, Bulldogs knock off Delta Devils

HUNTSVILLE -- With a limited number of pitchers available for Bulldogs head baseball coach Mitch Hill, Owen Stubberfield was called upon for his first start of the season Sunday and took advantage of the opportunity.

He had a no-hitter through three innings and pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs and scattering four hits as the Bulldogs beat Mississippi Valley State 17-4 in 7 innings to wrap up a four-game series. The two teams split the series 2-2 but A&M won the season series 4-2 with two wins in Itta Bena, Miss., last month.

The Bulldogs' offense helped end the game quickly with its highest run output of the season, giving needed relief to the beleaguered and short-staffed pitching corps.

J.T. O'Reel, Nolan Ramsey and Ty Russell each had three runs batted in. Ramsey had a triple while Russell and O'Reel each doubled.

The Bulldogs led 4-1 going into the bottom of the third inning when they erupted for six runs, keyed by Carlton Peppers' two-run single.

A&M added a run in the fifth for a 11-1 lead but MVSU scored three runs in the top of the sixth to cut A&M's lead to 11-4.

In Saturday's second game, the Bulldogs had a 10-3 lead in the sixth inning and lost 11-10 in 12 innings. On Sunday, they weren't about to let that happen.

In the bottom of the sixth, O'Reel sacrifice fly brought home Eugene Freeman for a 12-4 lead.

Then, with Peppers and Tanner Ivey on base, Ramsey tripled to right field and scored when the third baseman mishandled a throw from the outfield.

Dylan Payne followed that with a single and Darren White was walked. Russell then drilled the ball into centerfield for his double to bring home Payne and White for the 17-4 lead.

Brandon Marsonek came on in the top of the seventh, allowing just a single and giving the Bulldogs the win.
