Bulldogs earn split of doubleheader at Samford

BIRMINGHAM -- The Bulldogs got a gutsy 129-pitch outing from Brandon Marsonek and a three-run double from Eric Yarbrough to beat Samford 7-5 in game two of their doubleheader Tuesday.

Samford won the opener 18-6, despite a grand slam from Ryan Thrasher.

In the nightcap, Marsonek scattered nine hits in six innings to pick up his third win of the season. Josh Burchell closed the game in the seventh for his first save.

Saige Benson put the Bulldogs on top in the first inning with a two-run single.

Samford picked up a run in the bottom of the first and third innings to tie the score at 2-2.

In the Bulldogs' fourth, Benson led off with a single and moved to second on Dylan Payne's walk. After Darren White bunted the runners to second and third, Cornelius Woods was walked to load the bases. Yarbrough then ripped a 2-2 pitch into the leftfield corner to clear the bases and give A&M a 5-2 lead. The double was Yarbrough's first extra-base hit of the season.

Samford picked up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut A&M's lead to 5-4.

The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the top of the sixth when Woods scored on a wild pitch and Yarbrough scored on a two-out error.

Benson and Nolan Ramsey each had two hits and Woods scored two runs.

Ryan Thrasher hit his first career grand slam but the Bulldogs lost to Samford.

A&M took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Nolan Ramsey's third home run of the season.

However, that would be the extent of the Bulldogs' scoring until they scored five runs in the sixth inning - highlighted by Thrasher's slam. Ty Russell had an RBI single before the home run.

Cole Thiede and Ramsey each had two hits for A&M.

The Bulldogs will visit Alcorn State this weekend for a three-game SWAC series. Gametimes are 6 p.m Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
