Alcorn rallies to topple Bulldogs

LORMAN, Miss. -- Alcorn State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday to break a 3-3 tie in a 6-4 win over Alabama A&M.

The Bulldogs (5-11 SWAC, 10-33 overall) were led by Nolan Ramsey, who had three doubles in a four-hit game.

A&M took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ramsey led off with a double to centerfield. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Dylan Payne's sacrifice fly to rightfield.

However, the Braves (9-10, 13-23) responded with a run in their half of the inning and also scored in the fourth and fifth for a 3-1 lead.

In the sixth inning, Ramsey again hit a lead-off double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored one out later on Saige Benson's groundout to second base.

A&M tied the score in the eighth inning when Cornelius Woods scored on Carlton Peppers' triple to right field.

Then, in the Alcorn eighth, the Braves wrapped up the game with five straight hits leading to three runs and a 6-3 lead.

The Bulldogs made the score 6-4 in the ninth inning after Ramsey hit his third double and scored on Woods' one-out fielder's choice. But A&M would leave two runners on base when the inning ended.

J.T. O'Reel had a pair of singles for A&M and was left on base three times among the 13 runners the Bulldogs left stranded.

The two teams play Saturday at 3 p.m. in the second game of the three-game series.
